State Sector Technology Transfer Not Limited to Universities

In a story that is interesting primarily because it attaches some revenues to its licensing activities, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced the signing of another customer for its Right of Way and Utilities Management System (RUMS).

RUMS  allows states to track property and utility transactions in real time; essentially, it is project management software for managing very complicated right-of way issues.

Virginia DOT began licensing the software in 2004, now has at least three customers, and has reportedly generated $625,000 in licensing revenues to date.
