Another way IP flexes its valuation muscle is … funding pension plans?

In an article on maximizing IP value, Simon Crossley alluded to a novel use of IP, funding corporate pension plans, citing TUI Travel PLC and their Thomson and First Choice brands as an example.

To fund up to $400M of its three UK defined-benefit plans, TUI Travel created a partnership backed by the Thomson and First Choice brands. The funds will be given a limited interest in the partnership and will receive its pro rata share of periodic royalty payments.

Valuation Research Group has been actively performing engagements in this space, valuing trademarks for pension-funding purposes.
